Today my parents celebrate 50 years of marriage. They have known each other since they were teenagers. Together they have weathered fierce storms and rode high waves.
I have watched them share this love and been an extremely appreciative beneficiary of it for almost 40 years. What I realized today is that what is remarkable and worth telling you about these two love birds is not that their bond has lasted so long nor that they are still affectionate towards each other.
“But sweetheart…” he chimes with with an adoring pout as he wraps her up in his arms.
Oh yes, they are affectionate.
But what is remarkable and worth telling you about them is that they have always and continue to have a deep respect for each other, just as they are.
He accepts her. She accepts him.
“There is no point in telling him that…he has to do it his way”. She says smiling at my frustration with his persistence.
They are different. They honour themselves, but they support each other.
“Your dad is coming today. You don’t have to entertain him, just make sure you feed him.”
“I really want to get her something special. Can you help me? I have to have it in time for our trip.”
He accepts her.
She accepts him.
They respect each other.
They are in love. They give love. They are each a source of love.
Happy Anniversary you two!
With love and gratitude,
